I'd chime in and suggest that merging would be a very good idea.

The NDT server running here has NDT and Iperf (server daemon) running (mostly for those command line only folks). As I look at the admin pages for other NDT sites, the general run rate is on the order of either a small number or 30k/month. That might be a magic max number as that implies roughly 1.4 minutes for each test on a 24x7 basis. I'd guess this is primarily a US known service so this 30k/mo rate is possibly approaching the max possible, assuming people sleep sometime during the day.

Combining all the tests would insure testers were getting the full machine/network's resources to test against. This seems a lot better then deploying systems for each test service.

Hi!

I just restaged my Web100 server with both NDT and NPAD from PSC and it occurred to me that there might be a possibility of skewed results if both tests(NDT and NPAD) are being run by users at the same time if some sort of resource contention happened (CPU or Bandwidth). The system is GigE connected to about 250mb/s of bandwidth shared between I2 and the commercial internet. I can’t think of any reason why there would be a problem...but you never know.

Can anybody give me a heads up as to if they have experienced any difficulties in this sort of situation?

In practice this hasn't been in issue (yet), but we've thought about it. They certainly could affect each other's results.

We talked with Rich a while back about the possibility of merging the two systems under a unified framework for managing tests. We actually designed the npad server so that this would be as simple as possible. This is something we plan to revisit in the future.

Thanks,
